To beat the AI I think you only need to keep their hero + reserves in mind (and how to counter them (<- meaning having a plan to beat them!)) and have map awarness. Normally I have heavy fighting at our "borders" to this point (trying to hold/get 50-80% of the map), but with the mechs the tide turns and it is just keeping an eye out for the enemy reserve and pushing to their base. When I have 50%+ resources of the map, I get mechs out (often anti-infantry, but depending on the faction anti-mech instead). In the beginning of the game I try to hold my squads together to throw the AI off course (they often charge with one/two squads only, seldom all three). For reserves I often take something to get the edge or support, so for example machine gunners/medics or an AT-/MG-Gun.
